St. Toribio Alfonso de Mogrovejo, born in 1538 in Mayorca, Spain, was from childhood disposed to virtue and to great devotion to Our Lady. Daily he prayed her Office and the Rosary in addition to fasting and sacrifice especially on Saturdays in her honor.
King Philip II, recognizing his virtue and education, gave him the office of chief judge of the Supreme Court of Granada. In 1580, the King sent him to Lima, Peru to fill the position of the Episcopal See.
St. Toribio filled this position with distinction, succeeding in the reform of the clergy and the protection of the oppressed.
He was absolutely unyielding in matters of morals but kind in the treatment of the contrite. No opportunity was spared in saving souls from the greatest to the smallest. At the heart of his apostolate was an intense spiritual life-the offering of Masses, frequent confession, prayers and penances. He gave up his spirit on March 23, 1606.
St. Torobio repeats the examples of all the saints in his profound devotion to Our Lady. The King, aware of his piety, calls him to an important office in the government. Our days are so different . One can even say that , in our day, someone is appointed to office for the exact opposite reason. Catholic colleges are swamped with anti-Catholic teachers, doctrines and societies. As Pope Pius XII observed, man today has lost the notion of sin.
Let us pray to St. Torobio de Mogrovejo to ask Our Lady to give us a filial devotion to her which will allow us to see clearly the evils of sin and to fight all that propagate it.
